Garage Storage That Works: Cabinets, Slatwall and Overhead Racks
Share
Most cluttered garages don't have a space problem. They have a planning problem. The trick is to use all three zones of your garage (floor, walls and ceiling) for the things that belong there.
Floor: cabinets and tool chests
Steel cabinets keep chemicals, power tools and supplies behind closed, lockable doors. A cabinet system with a solid worktop gives you a workbench and storage in one footprint. Rolling tool chests keep hand tools organized and can move to where you're working.
- Look for welded steel construction and adjustable leveling legs for uneven floors.
- Lockable doors and drawers keep tools and chemicals away from kids.
- Ball-bearing, full-extension drawer slides make heavy drawers easy to use.
Walls: slatwall and pegboard
Slatwall panels turn bare walls into flexible storage. Hooks, baskets and shelves click into the grooves and can be moved any time your needs change. Use the walls for things you grab often: hand tools, cords, bikes, ladders and yard tools.
Ceiling: overhead racks and lifts
The space above your garage door and cars is the most wasted space in most garages. It's perfect for seasonal items like holiday decorations, camping gear and storage bins.
- Overhead racks mount to the ceiling joists and hold bulky items up and out of the way.
- Motorized storage lifts lower a platform to the floor so you can load it without a ladder, then raise it back up.
Always mount ceiling storage into the joists, stay within the rated capacity, and keep clear of garage door tracks and openers.
A simple plan
- Sort everything into keep, donate and toss.
- Group what's left by how often you use it.
- Daily items go on walls, tools go in cabinets, and seasonal items go overhead.
